Executive Summary

Psilocybin mushrooms are not a party upgrade. They are an amplifier – for what already lives within you. Mushrooms can be warm and beautiful, connecting and healing. But they are also very honest, very direct – they show us what we might not have wanted to see. That's precisely why it's worth not just stumbling in, but arriving prepared: with a good set, a safe setting, an appropriate dose, a clear intention – and enough space afterward so that the experience doesn't fade away. Buckle up for our all-inclusive guide to magic mushrooms (– no, we're not talking about 4-PrO-MET).

A text for people who may have never taken mushrooms before – and for anyone who wants to remember how to embark on a journey mindfully. A text that helps you understand the difference between mushroom trips and LSD trips and their effects.

What exactly are "Magic Mushrooms"?

When people talk about "mushrooms," they usually mean mushrooms containing psilocybin. In the body, this becomes psilocin, and that's the part that noticeably changes perception, emotions, and inner life. Mushrooms belong to the classic psychedelics – and although they have played a role in many cultures for a very long time, they are often new territory for modern people. Not because we lack information, but because much of the information is either fear-mongering or romanticization.

As is often the case, the truth lies somewhere in between: mushrooms are neither the devil's work nor "not a big deal." They are simply... powerful – we even consider them sacred. And such powerful and sacred things should be handled consciously.

Why Mushrooms?

The motives are similar to those for LSD: curiosity, fun, connection, personal growth. But our favorite reason remains the same: self-knowledge that doesn't just happen in the head, but in the entire system. Mushrooms can support you with the following:

  • emotional clearing (grief, fear, anger – finally feeling honestly)
  • recognizing patterns (relationships, self-image, defense mechanisms)
  • connection (to yourself, to nature, to life)
  • shifts in perspective that are not just "understood" but embodied

But: If you just want to escape – from stress, from pain, from responsibility – then mushrooms very often become that one (very loving) friend who radically and honestly says: "Nice to have you here. We're talking now!"

What do mushrooms feel like?

Many people experience psilocybin as more emotional and bodily than LSD. Less "crystal-clear sci-fi trip," more "forest and truth." Music can carry you like a blanket – or suddenly be too intense. Colors appear richer, things seem to "breathe," thoughts become more spiral than linear. And often there's that special kind of meaning: as if life is speaking louder than usual.

Important to know: Mushrooms often have more "body load" than LSD for many people. This can mean: nausea, yawning, trembling, hot/cold flashes, a strange tingling in the body. None of this has to happen – but if it does, it's usually not "a sign that something is wrong," but rather part of the transition. We recommend seeing this as a collaboration between body and mind; both work together to help you – you can trust that!

If you only take one expectation with you, let it be this: mushrooms amplify. And they amplify not just the "beautiful," but the real.

Phases of a Mushroom Journey (the forest path instead of a flight plan)

👽 The Phases: Because this is naturally one of the first questions one asks an experienced psychonaut, we have written a separate blog post that illuminates the phases of a psychedelic (LSD) trip. For this reason, we will be a little more concise here. You can assume that the phases feel similar and simply last roughly half as long.

Even though every trip is unique, there are various phases that all travelers go through during any psychedelic trip. In this section, we'll try to broadly illuminate them. Mushroom trips are usually shorter and more compact compared to LSD. This can feel more pleasant – or more intense in a confined space. Many magic mushroom journeys can be roughly divided into five sections:

1) Arriving at the forest edge (approx. 20–60 minutes)

You are still "You," but you notice that something is starting. Some get nervous because this quiet feeling suddenly arises: "Okay... something's about to happen." The body sometimes reports first: queasy stomach, goosebumps, hot/cold, heavy/light. The simplest thing helps most here: breathe, slow down, don't force anything. If nausea appears, it's often just a brief gateway, not an abyss.

2) The path narrows (60–120 minutes)

Now it's clear. Perception becomes denser, feelings become more present, and normal "everyday functions" suddenly feel... loud. Many people want to lie down, close their eyes, put on music. This is not "giving up," it's often precisely the smartest decision: you stop fighting the change.

3) The heart of the forest (Peak, approx. 2–4 hours after ingestion)

This is where what people take mushrooms for happens – and what they have respect for. Emotions can be vast: love, gratitude, sadness, fear, wonder. Inner images, memories, or insights can emerge, sometimes gently, sometimes directly.

The most important maxim for this phase is rarely a clever thought, but rather a physical "yes": allow, lie down, soften. Resistance makes it tight. Surrender makes space.

4) Clearing & Way back (approx. 4–6 hours)

You notice that you regain more language. You can sort things out. You can make notes. You can – if you wish – talk about it carefully. This is often the phase where you suddenly realize very clearly: "Ah. That's what it was about." And sometimes also: "Okay... I need to digest that first." Both are equally good.

5) Afterglow (Rest of the day or perhaps rest of the week)

Many people feel a special openness afterwards – softer edges, more gratitude, more sensitivity. But sometimes fatigue, irritability, or a need for withdrawal also arise. That's part of it too. Mushrooms may be short – but not necessarily "small."

Are mushrooms safe? (Safer Use for mushrooms – not for 4-PrO-MET)

When we talk about Safer Use at the Psychedelika Club, we don't mean "rules that spoil the fun." We mean: How do you do it so that you feel safe enough in the experience to be able to let go at all? There are five proven building blocks for this. Not because they are fancy, but because they work.

1) Intention: Compass, not a contract

An intention is not a magic formula. It is more of a direction. A sentence you give to the system so it knows what you are there for. This can be a question ("What am I avoiding?"), or something soft ("I want to feel myself again"). The trick is: Set it – but don't cling to it rigidly. You determine the direction. The journey and the spirits of the mushrooms determine the path – they know what you are ready for.

2) Set: Your inner weather

Mushrooms are honest meteorologists. If there's a storm inside you, they'll show you the storm. If there's calm inside you, they'll show you calm – and sometimes also the sadness underneath that you otherwise drown out.

A quick check beforehand is often enough:

  • Am I stable enough for surprises?
  • Am I currently in an acute stress/crisis mode?
  • Do I really have the capacity right now?

If you realize that you absolutely want to travel, even though everything in you is tired and longing for peace, gently ask yourself: Do I really need to go on a journey now? Is this "need" perhaps also a form of avoidance? Can you trust that the "right" time will come?

3) Setting: Your nest

The best dose is useless if your environment makes you nervous. Mushrooms like security. Warm, quiet, no appointments, no strangers, no potential interruptions.

If you want something at a glance, here's the minimal setting formula:

    • a safe space where you won't be disturbed
    • water & light food easily accessible
    • blanket, comfortable lying surface
    • music prepared in advance
    • phone away (or in airplane mode + emergency contact on standby)

4) Trip sitter: truly for the first time

Not tripping alone the first time is not a buzzkill, but a safety net. A good trip sitter is calm, trustworthy, non-judgmental, not overbearing. They don't "do" anything – they hold the space, so you can let go without fear of having to "function."

5) Integration: otherwise it remains a film

Many people lose the value of their journey not during the trip, but afterward – because they jump right back into everyday life the next day, as if nothing had happened.
If you want the experience to truly change you, give it space: sleep, rest, journaling, a conversation with a trusted person, walks. And then: a small, concrete step in real life. Not ten. One is enough. The next one will then likely come naturally.

Dosing psilocybin mushrooms (not 4-PrO-MET)

Guidance, not a test of courage: Mushrooms differ from LSD not only in their effect but also in how dosages are perceived. While LSD is dosed with extreme precision, mushroom doses fall within a much broader range – making them not less dangerous, but rather "more prone to error."

In addition:

  • Mushrooms vary greatly in their potency
  • Body weight is less critical than sensitivity
  • Mental openness and current mood play an enormous role

Therefore, now more than ever: less is often wiser than more.

Rough dosage ranges (dried mushrooms)

0.1 – 0.3 g | Microdosing
Subtle, often barely consciously psychedelic. Slight mood enhancement, increased perception, a little more presence. No trip, no altered reality.

0.3 – 0.8 g | Minidosing
For sensitive individuals, a noticeable change can already set in here: slight emotional opening, enhanced musical and nature perception, gentle body sensations. Still suitable for everyday life, but no longer "neutral."

1.0 – 1.5 g | Low Dose / Threshold
From here, the actual psychedelic experience begins for many. Thoughts become freer, emotions more intense, perception changes clearly. For sensitive or very open people, this can already be a full experience.

2.0 – 2.5 g | Moderate Dose
A distinct journey. Emotional depth, inner images, altered sense of time. No longer easily handled "on the side." Here, set, setting, and ideally a trip sitter should be in place.

3.0 g+ | High Dose
Highly introspective, potentially overwhelming. Loss of control can occur, as can very intense emotional processes. For beginners, generally not recommended.

Important: There is no prize for high numbers. The deepest experiences often happen not with the highest dose, but with the deepest trust and letting go.

Redosing out of impatience is one of the most common mistakes. Mushrooms sometimes come creeping, sometimes in waves. Give them time – at least 90 minutes – before you even consider changing anything.

What you should avoid (so it doesn't get unnecessarily complicated)

There are things that regularly make mushroom trips unnecessarily difficult. Not always, but often enough that it's worth avoiding them:

  • Polydrug use for the first time, especially cannabis, alcohol, or stimulants

  • Public places / new people, because social interaction on psychedelics quickly becomes overwhelming

  • Internet, social media, endless chatting, because it can pull you into strange loops

  • Impatient redosing, because mushrooms sometimes come in waves

  • "Pushing through" when you should actually be allowing yourself to soften

Risks & Contraindications of Mushrooms (not 4-PrO-MET)

Physically, mushrooms are considered relatively non-toxic for many people. The greater risks are usually psychological or arise from poor circumstances. This is not fear-mongering, but a pointer to where you should really be careful.

In the short term, nausea, circulatory issues, trembling, waves of anxiety, confusion, and overwhelm can occur. Long-term problems are rare but possible – especially if someone is psychologically vulnerable or regularly engages in very intense experiences without integrating them.

Really important: People with a personal or family history of psychosis should be very cautious or avoid it altogether. Also, with severe psychological crises or certain medications (especially psychiatric medication), interactions and unpredictable effects can occur. When in doubt: clarify medically/therapeutically, even if it's annoying.

Mushrooms vs. LSD (and why there is no winner)

Many want to know: "Which is better?" Honestly? That's like asking whether the sea or the mountains are better. It depends on who you are, where you are, and what is calling you right now. We love both! Both call – but at different times!

  • Duration & Form: Mushrooms are often shorter and more compact. LSD is longer and "broader." Mushrooms can feel like a dense walk in the woods, while LSD is more like an extremely long flight with many sci-fi landscapes.
  • Heart vs. Head: Many experience mushrooms as more emotional, earthy, and body-oriented. LSD is often described as more cognitive, clearer, and playful (not always, but often).
  • Bodyload: Mushrooms more frequently involve stomach/body issues. Some find LSD "cleaner," but also often exhaustingly long.
  • Controllability: Some people feel more mentally "navigable" on LSD. Mushrooms often feel like something with a will of their own. This can be beautiful – or challenging if you struggle to let go of control.

And in the end, perhaps the most beautiful truth is: You don't have to decide which path is "right" – right and wrong are concepts invented by us humans that we can lovingly discard. You are allowed to learn which path suits you right now and then follow it.

🔬Acid 101: Our most widely read article is probably our LSD guide. Incredibly well written and covers everything you'd want to know before a psychedelic journey with LSD. The return on investment of time is enormous, we promise!

Mini Checklist (the absolute minimum!)

So you have something concrete to refer back to the day before your trip:

  • Before: good sleep, reduce stress, light meal
  • During: safe space, water, blanket, music, phone away
  • First time: tripsitter and rather take less
  • After: keep the next day(s) free, sleep, journal, talk, integrate

Procurement crime – where to get mushrooms?

Psilocybin mushrooms in German-speaking countries face a similar problem to LSD: They are culturally widespread, historically well-documented – and yet legally prohibited. In Germany, Austria, and most other European countries, psilocybin-containing mushrooms are considered illegal substances. This applies not only to possession and sale but also to cultivation, even if it is intended exclusively for personal use.

Many people sooner or later come across the topic of home cultivation. Factually, it's no longer rocket science today, morally it's often classified as "harmless" – legally, it remains a criminal offense. It's important to state this clearly, without drama, but without sugarcoating.

At the same time, more and more legal alternatives are emerging worldwide, which are structurally related to psilocybin and partly show similar effects profiles. At this point, a clear distinction is important to us: Our 4-PrO-MET Microdosing, 4-PrO-MET Macrodosing, and our 4-PrO-MET Drops are expressly not offered for human consumption! They are declared as research chemicals and are intended exclusively for scientific purposes.

Outro

Mushrooms are not there to impress you. They are more there to make you remember. Things you know but no longer feel. Things you feel but no longer allow. The truth beneath all the noise that we so often create ourselves.

If you take them, don't do it to be "far away" – but to be closer. And if you want to give yourself a gift in the process, then let go of the desire for a perfect journey and embark on a conscious journey. Then it will be: safe enough, soft enough, honest enough. The mushrooms serve you as an alliance, you can trust that.
