Bicycle Day – LSD bike ride made history

Artsy Shot: Hands-free

Executive Summary

What happens when a chemist accidentally takes LSD and then rides his bike home? A psychedelic holiday is created, celebrated today by the entire psychedelics community: Bicycle Day. This legendary ride by Albert Hofmann was more than just a trip (in a double sense) – it was the starting shot for a new era in science, culture, and consciousness research. You can find out why this date is still celebrated today and whether you should ride a bike on LSD here.

Every year on April 19th, countless people around the globe remember Bicycle Day. This is the day when Albert Hofmann, the discoverer of LSD, had an extraordinary experience. His self-experiment with the substance led to a legendary bicycle tour that profoundly influenced psychedelics research as well as art, music, and therapy.

What exactly happened on that day many years ago? What exactly is the story behind the most curious bicycle tour in the history of science? Do many people celebrate this occasion today, and if so, how can you celebrate this day?

The Historic Bicycle Day as an LSD Ride: Albert Hofmann's Discovery

In 1938, chemist Albert Hofmann first synthesized LSD-25 (lysergic acid diethylamide) at Sandoz in Basel. His goal was to research medicinal active ingredients from the ergot fungus. Since initial tests showed no particular results, he did not further investigate the substance at first.

In 1943, Hofmann decided again (perhaps by divine inspiration?!) to synthesize LSD. On April 16, he inadvertently absorbed a small amount, which led to an altered perception. Three days later, on April 19, he ventured a conscious self-experiment with 250 micrograms of LSD – unaware that this was quite a high dose – especially if you don't know what to expect.

Since the effect set in intensely for Hofmann, he asked his assistant Susi Ram(m)stein (no, that's not exactly a music recommendation for the next trip) to accompany him home on his bicycle (💡 Here we learn the first LSD lesson: A trip sitter is essential for the first journey!). A car was not available to him during wartime – which in this case was perhaps for the better. This ride became the birth of Bicycle Day, as it was characterized by intense perceptual changes:

  • Visual hallucinations: Colors appeared more intense and shapes distorted.
  • Dissolution of the sense of time: Is there anything other than the now?
  • Emotional interplay: Phases of fear and euphoria alternated.
  • Altered body perception: He felt weightless and believed he was seeing himself from the outside.

After a few hours in his inner psychedelic wonderland, the LSD effect wore off. The next day he felt clear and mentally refreshed. The first consciously experienced human journey through the different LSD trip phases was complete.

We can only speculate what it must have felt like for Hofmann – but one thing is for sure: If you suddenly think your bike is made of light and the road is one big wave while cycling today, you might want to stop for a moment... for the sake of both Alberts.

Influence on Science, Culture & Society through LSD Bicycle Day

After Hofmann's discovery, LSD was intensively researched. Psychiatrists investigated the substance for the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, and addiction. In the 1960s, LSD inspired the hippie movement, musicians, artists, and literary figures. The substance became a symbol for a new view of consciousness and perception.

Today, LSD is experiencing a renaissance in science:

  • Microdosing is being investigated as a method to promote creativity and cognitive abilities.
  • Therapeutic applications show promising results for PTSD, depression, and anxiety disorders.
  • LSD derivatives are gaining importance as they are legally available in some countries.

Although LSD remains prohibited in most countries, interest in its groundbreaking medical and psychological benefits is growing.

Bicycle Day LSD: A Symbol for Psychedelics

The term "Bicycle Day" has become established in the scene. It refers both to Hofmann's historical bicycle tour and the celebration of this incredible substance, LSD.

  • Some LSD blotters feature bicycle motifs as an homage to Bicycle Day.
  • Events in various cities worldwide commemorate Hofmann's discovery.
  • Art projects and music festivals pick up on the theme.

For many people, Bicycle Day is not just a reminder of the past. It is also a symbol for the future of psychedelics research. It serves as an image that slowly but surely (or rapidly and uncertainly) steers us towards a future where psychedelics are "normal".

And if you see a cyclist with an especially big grin on their way to work on April 19th, you might know why.

What events take place on Bicycle Day?

Every year, Bicycle Day has been officially celebrated worldwide on April 19th since 1985, accompanied by various activities. Some typical events surrounding Bicycle Day and LSD include:

  • Psychedelic meet-ups for exchange and discussions
  • Documentaries & lectures about the history of LSD
  • Symbolic bike tours reminiscent of Hofmann's ride
  • Art and music inspired by psychedelic experiences

Whether with or without LSD – the day stands for the exploration of consciousness and new perspectives on perception. You can also find exciting events with us – from yoga to breathwork and psychedelic dance, and hopefully very soon, retreats.

Set, Setting & Safety: Conscious Use of LSD, Not Just on Bicycle Day

Anyone dealing with psychedelics should be familiar with the principles of set & setting. Mental state and environment strongly influence the personal experience.

Harm reduction tips for a safe LSD experience:

  • Right environment: calm, safe, with trusted people
  • Mental preparation: no intake if unsure or experiencing negative emotions
  • Pay attention to dosage: 10-50 micrograms to dip a toe in the water, 50-100 micrograms if you want a bit more, 150-250 micrograms for an intense experience
  • Plan for a trip sitter: sober, experienced person can provide security
  • Clarify legal situation: inform yourself beforehand about legality, as LSD is illegal in most countries

For beginners, a microdosing guide can be helpful for a gradual approach to the effects.

Those interested can learn about alternatives such as LSD derivatives. Even if some people are looking for ways to buy research chemicals like 1BP-LSD or engage in LSD microdosing, responsible consumption and legal regulations should always be observed. Please note that our research chemicals are not intended for human consumption!

The Significance of Bicycle Day Today

Bicycle Day is not just a psychedelic holiday in the scene – it commemorates a turning point in consciousness research. Albert Hofmann's self-experiment opened doors to new scientific insights and inspired generations of artists, researchers, and consciousness explorers.

Today, LSD is gaining importance again – be it in therapy, creativity promotion, or neuroscience. Bicycle Day remains an opportunity to reflect on consciousness, learn new things, and see the world with different eyes. Or at least to pedal into the future with an inner smile – where would you like to go?

PS: We hope it is clear that you should not ride a bicycle on LSD – especially not without a helmet! Safety first! Helmets are cool, by the way.
